Holiday Boarding Goes More Smoothly With a Clear Care Plan
By Peter Richmond | Woof LLC
Holiday travel has enough moving parts without leaving your dog's care plan until the last minute. An early conversation gives you time to discuss dates, paperwork and the everyday details that help a boarding team understand your dog.
Begin with the facility. Ask about your proposed stay and the information needed to prepare. Availability is something to confirm directly, rather than assume from a past visit.
Write down the everyday details
Think about what someone caring for your dog would need to know. Feeding instructions, normal routines, relevant health information and current contact details are useful starting points.
Be specific. A measured food amount is easier to follow than a note saying “a little extra.” Clear written instructions also help reduce the chance that an important detail gets lost during a busy drop-off.
If your dog takes medication, discuss the arrangement with the facility before arrival and provide the veterinarian's instructions as requested. Do not make medication changes as part of preparing for a stay without consulting your veterinarian.
Ask what to bring
Each boarding facility has its own guidance about food, containers, bedding and personal belongings. Ask before packing a bag full of items.
Woof asks owners not to bring favorite toys because they can create problems if another dog takes them. That is a good example of why a familiar item at home may not belong in a shared care environment.
Label approved belongings and supplies. Keep your instructions together so they can be reviewed easily, rather than scattered across several messages.
Review the required records early
Woof requires vaccinations for rabies, kennel cough, distemper and parvo. Ask which documents are needed for your dog's stay and how they should be submitted.
If a record needs updating or you have a health question, contact your veterinarian. The boarding team can explain its requirements; your veterinarian can advise on your dog's individual care.
This is a practical reason to start early. Paperwork is easier to organize before your suitcase is by the door.
Plan the handoff
Confirm arrival and pickup arrangements, the best way to reach you and a backup contact if you will be difficult to reach while traveling.
Tell the team about relevant changes since the last visit. A new feeding plan, a recent health issue or different contact information should be part of the current record.
Before leaving, make sure any questions about instructions are answered. The aim is to give the team a usable plan and give you confidence that the important details have been discussed.
Start with a conversation
Woof provides daycare, boarding and grooming in Glenburn for dogs from the Greater Bangor area. Boarding is available seven days a week, including holidays; daycare follows a different holiday schedule.
Text Woof to discuss your proposed dates and your dog's care needs. If you are new to the facility, ask about arranging the introductory visit Woof requires.
Good preparation is an act of care. A clear plan helps the people looking after your dog focus on the dog, rather than trying to locate missing instructions.
